Welcome to Start With Art + Three Picture Books to Inspire Creativity

Welcome to Start With Art! I’m so glad you are here. I hope to use this space to keep you up to date on new offerings, classes, and projects. I’ll also be sharing some of my favorite books to inspire creativity, art project ideas using materials found at home, and other tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.

Books have always been a huge source of inspiration for me as a maker and as an art educator. I have found that the right picture book can be the perfect jumping off point to inspire creative making. Here are three picture books to inspire creativity in your little artist.

  1. Mix It Up! by Herve Tullet

This is one of my favorite books to use with toddlers to talk about color mixing. Get your reading voice ready because this book demands an audience and an engaged crowd! Your little ones will love following along with the story and mixing the colors right alongside author and artist, Herve Tullet.

  2. Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg

Does your child get nervous about “messing up” their art? They’ve made a mistake and now their art is ruined? This can be one of the most challenging things to encounter as a parent and educator. This book creates moments of mistakes and turns them into creative opportunities. See what “mistakes” your artist can dream up next!

  3. Ish by Peter H. Reynolds

Similar to the previous title, Ish is about a child who loves to draw but one day is told that his drawing doesn’t look the way it is supposed to. This book provides an important perspective for children that there is no right or wrong way to make art.

Keep on creating!
